General strike in Spain, not a big thing in Jerez

Today, the 29th of September, we had a tranquil day, many shops were closed, others were not.

The opinions of people we spoke to varied.

Almost everybody said a strike was not a good medizine for the country.

Others mentioned, they don’t get money for striking, so they simply can’t afford it.

It was a bit like a bank holiday, people were calm and friendly.

The main strike event was dated at 7:30pm.

After maybe 45 minutes the show was over and some more shops opened.

At Monday we visited the ‘Mercado de la Vendimia’, a middle age market between the Plaza Arenal and the Alcazar.

Beside de food (you get there handmade sausages and bread), I liked most Manuel’s wire- art.

He really does amazing things using simple means.

He sells them from 2,50€ the figure.

That’s not expensive, isn’t it?

We visited this event the 20th of August, entry fee is 10€, it starts at 22:00. See the whole program here.

We were like every year quite pleased. ‘Viernes Flamenco’ has a unique atmosphere: The local people are mixed with a few tourists and so the audience responds/interacts well with the performers.

See the recording we did on that event:

Performers were:

An Archetype and Painter from Jerez - Agustín Pérez González

Today I want to introduce you a neighbour, painter and a chemist’s shop owner from the Plaza Mercado, Barrio (quarter) San Mateo.

Agustín also gives clases for painting — The unique oportunity to learn painting from one of the last remaining artists of Jerez!

Agustín was born 1935 in San Mateo, Jerez and lived here his entire life.

He documented the eventful life in Jerez in several paintings that he has shown to me recently.

He started painting in his childhood autodidactically, just trying it. The sources of his inspiration are the people and the environment of his native town.

Noticeable are also the influences of his favourite painters like Velásques, El Greco, Jóse de Ribera or Rembrand.
