General strike in Spain, not a big thing in Jerez

Today, the 29th of September, we had a tranquil day, many shops were closed, others were not.

The opinions of people we spoke to varied.

Almost everybody said a strike was not a good medizine for the country.

Others mentioned, they don’t get money for striking, so they simply can’t afford it.

It was a bit like a bank holiday, people were calm and friendly.

The main strike event was dated at 7:30pm.

After maybe 45 minutes the show was over and some more shops opened.

At Monday we visited the ‘Mercado de la Vendimia’, a middle age market between the Plaza Arenal and the Alcazar.

Beside de food (you get there handmade sausages and bread), I liked most Manuel’s wire- art.

He really does amazing things using simple means.

He sells them from 2,50€ the figure.

That’s not expensive, isn’t it?

We visited this event the 20th of August, entry fee is 10€, it starts at 22:00. See the whole program here.

We were like every year quite pleased. ‘Viernes Flamenco’ has a unique atmosphere: The local people are mixed with a few tourists and so the audience responds/interacts well with the performers.

See the recording we did on that event:

Performers were:

Cante: ALBERTO SANCHEZ “EL ALMENDRO”
Guitarra: José Ignacio Franco
Cante: BARULLO DE JEREZ
Guitarra: Manuel Moneo (Nieto)

Baile: EDUARDO CLAVIJO
Invitado “Tio Juan Parrilla”

Horserace at the beach of Sanlucar

Last week (19th August 2010) we have been in Sanlucar de Barrameda to visit some of the traditional yearly horse races at the beach. This races are celebrated always in August.
More infos you get on spanish_flag http://www.carrerassanlucar.es.

It’s amazing, people are bathing or laying on the beach and a few metres further horses are racing in a shut off part of the beach. At the finishing line the promoter built a closed area with VIP lounge. The entrance fee was 12€. From the grandstand there we made the video.
At the promenade we enjoyed the party, just the mosquitoes liked us a bid too much.
Sanlucar is may be 25 km from Jerez, a nice daytrip from Casa Rosaleda!

Sharon a NY artist and guest of us, sent us a tile with inspirations she got in Casa Rosaleda

Tile inspired by floor of the 'De la Madre' apartment.

Hello together,

Aprox. one and a half months ago we got a package from the US.

Sharon, a former guest sent us some beautiful tiles she made from drawings in our house (Thank you very much!).

We know her as a  slow traveller and inspiring artist from New York. She and Stephen, her husband,  stayed one month in Casa Rosaleda.

A week ago they also sent us their guestbook entry for their stay in November 2009.

We love her work, because we think she shows up the point of the scene.

You´ll see, her sketches and drawings are  inspired by anatomy and every day life scenes.

Get more and become a fan: Sharon’s blog.

It´s also possible to buy some of her work on www.cafepress.co.uk/sharonfrost.

Both Sharon and Stephen are enthusiastic photographers. Get some impressions on www.flickr.com/photos/sharonfrost.

The comments for the selected drawing on the tile appear here.
